MCDM officially announces their RPG

Man, how wild would it be if a spiritual successor to 4E took off fifteen years later and succeeded while the original 4E was extremely divisive and treated as the black sheep of D&D...
A common refrain I hear a lot is people saying they like 4e as a game, they just hated it as D&D. If that's a true sentiment then there should be a market for it.

The creators of Lancer & Icon, Gubat Banwa, Beacon, Fabula Ultima, and Strike! RPG have all cited 4e D&D as a major influence on their games. You can also see some influence of 4e on Shadow of the Demon Lord. One thing that several of the creators have said, however, is that the toxicity around 4e D&D in the hobby discouraged them from publicly naming that influence, though that has changed a lot over the past five years or so with content creators like Matt Colville being so positive about it.

I've never played Zweihander, but Castles & Crusades is wildly compatible with OD&D through 3E.
The only shared mechanics between C&C and AD&D are hit points, levels, and the attribute names and ranges. All the resolution mechanics are different. Even the modifiers by attribute are different.

They are, simply put, using the same stats in very different ways, which, from a "Can I grab this module and convert it on the fly" sure, if you think of that as "compatible"... but I find that level to be better described as convertible.

See, as a rules oriented person, C&C is barely even a look alike. All the resolution works differently from AD&D (which is what it attempts to emulate the look and tone of), excepting Attribute generation and the basics of magic.

What does that even mean?

If I do something and say it's not official does that mean it didn't happen? Sounds like a recipe for the perfect crime! :D

"You stand accused of robbing Gotham City Bank!"

"I didn't rob it officially your honor."

"You're free to go!"
An official announcement is when you announce a thing through official channels. In this case, Matt's YouTube.

We can't get perfect market penetration figures for then or now, but I would bet a higher percentage of fantasy gamers are playing not-D&D now than when, say, RuneQuest was in its heyday.

There are a crap ton of choices out there and many of them, like Exalted, have enjoyed periods of being quite popular.
Not sure about this. If I had to guess based on my less than perfect view of the industry, I'd guess that there are more people playing non-D&D than there were at that time, because the market has grown - but D&D (and it's progeny) seem to have driven the majority of that growth so I'd be surprised if the actual percentage has shifted towards non-D&D.

Personally though, I think number of players is more important than market percentages.

Snark aside, so the Discord isn't 'official' but YouTube is 'official'? How do we know which channels are 'official' and which channels to ignore as not being 'official' announcements?

When they announced it back in January, this wasn't 'official' I'm assuming?

What about Twitch? Was that 'official'?

(Or can we just officially agree that the word 'official' officially has no official meaning in this context? That's my 'official' opinion, anyway.)
