Teos talks a bit about the backlash.
This is a really excellent, thoughtful article, by the way. I also recommend - thank you for posting it!

The only reason I've even heard of this is from this thread. I'm hardly well connected, is there a Twitter outrage storm going on?
Yes. Apparently folks want their RPG news from people who mostly just sit in their closet, pulling things to talk about out of the air, rather than actually engaging with the subject of that news and asking questions. It is wild to see.

"WotC" is actually a trending topic for me on Twitter at the moment (trending topics depend on your location, stuff you engage with there, etc., so it may not be for everyone else at the moment) and it's almost entirely people screaming about how unethical it is for people reporting the news to go to an event where stuff will be announced.

Honestly, it makes me wonder how much some folks are spending on dice if they think a catered meal from some restaurant in Renton is going to fatally compromise games journalism. It's going to be a pretty ordinary meal, folks. And swag sounds impressive until you have a closet full of it and it's a pain in the butt.

I have a friend who reviews videogames for a relatively small website and he's constantly trying to give the stuff away on Facebook -- it's by no means a bribe to him at this point, if it ever was, which I doubt.

Tbf to Renton (I MUST BE!)

Renton has one of the best restaurants in the state.

Also, they're going to boring Bellevue for this event.

If they were holding the event in Renton, I can't imagine they would be going to the top restaurant in town if they're feeding 100 (?) people in a big conference room or auditorium.

Based on events I know about thrown by other companies, this will be, at best a $25 meal per person, if they went to the restaurant themselves.

Again, a weird thing to think would fatally compromise someone, IMO.

Also, no offense against Renton or Washington State, home of both tech overlords and sparkly vampires.
