D&D (2024) infinite time and money

Okay bare with me I promise this is about 1D&D/5eRevised....

lets imagine a world were you are magically gifted infinite time and money for use in TTRPG only... You can play 500 hours a week with all the books/minis/terrain you want. You still need to work and sleep and do all your other things but when you game time just stops (and no monkey paw/wish BS where you still age) this is just you are free to game however much you want.

How long and how much D&D could you play before you got sick of it?

a few different angles. How long could you go with just PHB? How long could you go with all the 5e stuff out right now (including 3rd party) and How long could you go if 1D&D/Revised5e had a new book schedule similar to 5e?

TBF I already play 2 nights a week (1 a weekly game and 2 games that alternate so 3 regular campaigns) and in theory I have a once a month game that never really happens... so I may be different then many.

Okay so here is coming back to why this is here not in the basic D&D form. As things continue this matters because we work with this playtest I have seen a lot of people say we do or don't need X. SO I am asking to see if there is a way to reckon when/if you need a new edition.

From a business perspective, you only need a new edition when sales start to stagnate or drop off. (for whatever reason)

right but what would make that drop off? people leaving... why would people leave? because they played out the total amount they could (or close)

Sure, it's possible to get burned out, even if you don't have infinite time and money. But that's a hard question to answer because everyone has a different threshold.

But aside from quantity of play, making changes to the rules that people don't like could be a motivating factor, but then again, you can always keep playing by the original rules, or homebrew rules.

Culture and play preferences: Newbies v. Grognards, for example.

A company revealing it's distain for it's customers.

A pricing structure that creates barriers to entry for some marginalized people.

right... so what is YOUR threshold? that is the hole idea of the thread... what you think is the most you could play removing all the obstacles.

I bet I would start with I have a dozen campaign ideas so we can play 4-5 hours a day everyday of the week and have it be a diffrent campaign... I also have at least 5 PC concepts I want to try and some classes I have not fully explored... so the first few months would be great.

But I would lose interest in less then a year. I bet 7 campaigns (say run 3 play 4) each 1/ week for 9 months (185ish hours each) would get me to about done with each... some would end sooner some may make the whole year. However as each one fell off I would be less and less likely to want to keep doing 5e D&D... unless 1D&D changes drastically I can't imagine it revitalizing for more then a few extra months on there...

Pretty sure an infinite amount of time. I might not want to play continuously; there are other things I'd want to do with infinite time, but I'm pretty sure I could play D&D for longer than the lifetime of the universe and not run out of ideas. I have 10's of lifetimes of ideas in my head that I'll never get to play even without brainstorming for more.

I wouldn't play with the edition that is out or which is coming out, because I like my own homebrewed edition (3.25, Celebrim's Edition). But, the observation about how much time I could invest would be true regardless of edition. I could do the same infinite amount of time with 1e AD&D, for example, though over time I suspect my house rules would migrate toward the 3.25e I already use because it plays like I prefer and covers my homebrewed setting. Likewise, if I played 5e, I suspect that there would also be rules drift back toward or borrowing things from 3.25.

But the setting for D&D is countably infinite. There are bigger infinities out there, but even with what I have it would go forever. Which is one of the things I like about an RPG compared to say 'Settlers of Caitan' or 'Wingspan' or 'Skyrim' or 'Canasta' most any other game. I could and do eventually get bored with an individual game. I'd never get bored of an RPG, not in a million years.

Do you need sleep during this time?

I'd take a different angle...if one could have endless time if they did one activity, which in essence could make them immortal if they were willing to do it forever...how many people would leap onto the possibility of endless life?

PS: And our D&D team of immortal players are now composed of Bill Gates, Elon Musk, and Jeff Bezos. These guys will do anything to never die! I think Musk will be the most hard pushing on the game though with the most insane antics to keep going no matter what happens or how sick of the rules he might get!
