Just so you know, the options are not 900+ pages of rules futilely trying to cover everything imaginable or Calvinball. There’s a vast excluded middle. Also, maybe read up what Calvinball actually is. It does not mean what you seem to think it means.

So you don’t need WotC’s permission to use your imagination, but you do need WotC to write all the game mechanics for you. Hmm. Maybe skip the middleman and use your imagination to…write some game mechanics. You know, just like WotC does.
