I disagree that the DM controls short rests. They can make short rests risky, but it is ultimately the PCs who decide to rest or not to rest.
Well, yes. The players can rest even if the DM says it’s risky. And then the DM sends in monsters to spoil the rest, because they did warn you. If the DM doesn’t want you to rest right then and there for whatever reason, it’s not happening.

am I the only one that spends most adventureing day getting 1-3 short rest? More going to 3 then 0?
3 short rests would be glorious. We always seem to be in a situation where it’s too dangerous, or it’s safe and everyone wants a long rest. When you’re the only short rest class, there’s not a lot of onus on the other characters to want a lunch break 20 minutes* after breakfast.

*which is my DMs big issue with short rests. When even long combats take less than 2 minutes of game time (with 6 seconds per round), we can get through multiple fights and still be early in the morning game-wise :)

I've often remarked that the thing that bugged me the most about 5e was that the design currency appeared to be measured in "spell units."

That they are making this even more explicit is not, IMO, a good thing. That said, this is my preference, and I tend to prefer magic to be rare and spectacular, not common and boring.
Well, spell units as resources would support the, "this is for the VTT" theory.

There's a reason 4e short rests were five minutes long - enough time to grab a breather, clean your weapons, bandage wounds, and have a bite or some water.

Sure. I mean, I'm totally fine with power equivalency and reskinning (I'm a 4e fan, after all), but I'd also be fine with spells having a stronger fictional identity and only being used by a few classes.

My personal ideal is that spells would be treasure, but the game definitely isn't going to drift in that direction.
More's the pity.
