D&D (2024) They butchered the warlock in the new packet

Because the DM set you up to fail and is going to claim they were being 'realistic' to justify it.

One of the biggest faults in the DMg is a lack of big text box saying 'Hey, the default game isn't designed to run like the game ran 40 years ago. If that's what you want, here' how to do it'.

That’s not what I said. I said that if the DM would rather TPK the party than allow them to take a needed rest, that’s a DM issue. That is a very, very different sentiment than “the DM is doing something wrong of the PCs can’t rest whenever they want.”
To be honest, I'm not sure I see the difference.

But I appreciate your posts attempting to clarify it! I suspect we're both at a communication impasse on this...damn this internet thing :).

So pure thought experiment.

Most people have pegged the proper amount of short rests at two. What if we just tripled the amount of spell slots a warlock gets and recharge them on a long rest? Obviously, higher potential to nova would be a problem, but if we invented a way to stop that, it might be a solution.

I guess I'm akin how important is the "short rest" part of the mechanic?

It's the ability to cast too many high level spells in the same encounter that is the issue if you simply triple the slots. A 10 minute ritual recharge seems seems more sensible and in keeping with existing mechanics.

Speaking for myself, that would be unsatisfying, because now I have to manage 6 spell slots over the course of a whole adventuring day instead of managing just 2 spell slots over the course of about an encounter or two. I don’t like managing resources over a whole adventuring day. That’s much more difficult to make good predictions about, so I end up hoarding my spell slots and never using them. With short rest recovery I only have to evaluate, “do I need to use this limited resource now?” instead of “when over the course of six encounters am I going to have the greatest need to use this limited resource?”

I for one would feel uncomfortable with a character walking into a boss fight with six top level spells. Don't care if it's a short rest per se, but the nova level being capped is part of the balance.

They do seem to be introducing a limited daily selection as well, to pad out the warlock's slots: 1 free casting from your pact list per day. 1 free casting of any spell obtained via mystic arcanum. There are options that might work to pad out spell casting without massively overpowering the class. Feats like shadow-touched too.

Yup, that's where the balance is maintained between the original and the proposal here.
