Not that I'm arguing on their behalf, but they also had a TON of people willfully spreading misinformation that kept it all "confusing".
True.

But had they called it an expansion fromthe start, they could have headed them off early using expansion's clearer definition.

Is it really any dumber than what they already tried and go the Movie Reboot route of just using the name of the original and leave everyone to use random, non-standard ways to talk about Robocop (2014)? Or maybe this one will go the Dredd route and 5.5 will be called DUNGEONS.
Remember, lots of Microsoft folks there now, and Xbox, Xbox 360, Xbox One and Xbox One X, then Xbox Series X/S. I actually went with Xbox this gen last year, and, though I’m a gamer, I still had to triple check to verify that I was getting the most recent gen.

This is why numbers are easier to manage, what with 5.5 being higher than 5 and all.

You gotta keep in mind that they (WotC, internally) almost certainly had all the same arguments that we have on here about What to Name It. Ultimately someone makes the decision and it doesn't matter what anyone thinks (even anyone at the company) - it's called what it's called.

It's not really so much "unclear" as it is that some people don't like it.

By the community.

No matter what dumb thing the 100K an hour consultant they hired tells them to call it.
