D&D (2024) Jeremy Crawford: “We are releasing new editions of the books”

As Ive said in the past, if they continue to maintain that 5e is "compatible", then they're only going to ignite another decade of arguments over class disparities, because obviously the new meta is going to revolve around whats most powerful, which will be almost entirely original 5e classes, and Id be willing to wager that itd become commonplace to houserule in hybrid classes that just take the 5e classes and add in the 1DND stuff on top of them, not really fixing anything and in most cases making the issue dramatically worse.

Its the single biggest unforced error they could be making trying to change the game as dramatically as OneDND has while trying to frame it as just a revision.

Which means it needs conversion? Why would it need conversion if it is the same edition?
Sigh.

If you can't be bothered to read the playtest document and see how easy it is to use a 2014 class with the 2024 rules . . . . I don't know what else to say.

You simply take the listed 2014 subclass abilities, in order, but at the points abilities are granted by the 2024 class. You slightly change at which levels you receive each ability. That's it.

If that amount of "conversion" means the 2024 rules are an entirely new game for you . . . . oof.

There's a "meta" in D&D? I suppose for min-maxxers trying to game the system to build super-characters, sure. I don't think WotC should really worry about that crowd, however.

Will folks continue to argue over whether D&D 2024 is a new game, a new edition, a new revision, and how compatible it is with D&D 2014 long after the new books are released? Of course they will. Will the arguments be as pointless and fact-free as these things always tend to be? Yep.

Yeah, those people don't buy the supplements at all. That's why WotC has focused on producing full campaign settings and other flavor books with zero player options for every book.

I appreciate we managed to get 7 pages without invoking a Thing All Players Are Expected to Hate Despite It Being Quite Mainstream.

I wish someone could explain to me why it matters what they call the new books. For a bunch of hobbyists who love to brag about how they can do it all themselves, I just don't see the point.

It really does not matter if they call it a new edition or not. I'm just so sick of so much online energy being funneled to this absolutely pointless argument.

I had to do a lot of conversion during the 4e era before essential came around, because the errata of the classes were filling folders...

2e skills and powers also changed a lot of the structures, so class kits also did not work perfectly smooth. And so on.

So wherever someone wants to draw a line. There are som many historical precedents regarding edition changes and not that any argumentation finds a counter example...

Some abilities won't currently work. But other than that, i guess, some people like the narrative that WotC is lying to them. Big evil corporation and so on.

It's the kobayashi maru: if they don't update the rules, people will ignore the 24 update. If they do update the rules, people will complain it's no longer compatible. If they say the old rules are compatible, people will complain it's not 100% compatible and it invalidates the old stuff. If they say it's a brand new start, people will complain that it's a cash grab and they want to resell you an entire edition's worth of stuff again. And if WotC hadn't announced a refresh, people would complain WotC isn't updating the game and it was getting stale.
