I'm trying to figure out how to convert the Ultimist class by Gary Gygax, from Polyhedron #23 (May 1985), to 5th edition D&D. This is, quite possibly, the best class he ever wrote. They attack as fighters, cast clerical and magic-user spells (using a spell point system instead of preparing spells), and have some monk and thief abilities. But, they only get d6 hit points...

No way, it's GYGAX, it must be totally legit! He absolutely wouldn't write anything that was unbalanced!

I forgot to mention, they also get expanded characteristic bonuses, like how he did Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity for barbarians in Unearthed Arcana, but for their other characteristics as well...

I do appreciate how their right hand gets treated as a sword of sharpness at 4th level, and a vorpal blade at 8th level.

If it was unbalanced, Gygax would have specified both hands.

Bilateral symmetry is inherently more balanced.
