Same. The best thing that can happen is for the 5E community to also more deeply embrace third party and homebrew. However, there is such a strong stigma against third party. On forums like reddit's dndnext, you really get treated poorly if you aren't a mainline designer or a homebrewer whose spent years fighting against the stigma to build a following. Sad when other communities, like the OSR, embrace mechanical creativity on a much deeper level.
Go to the Reddit Unearthed Arcana forum. You will get no homebrew backlash there! I have gotten a lot of interesting ideas and monsters from that forum..

if so I will miss my half elfs
I guess the Half Elf is paradoxically a "popular misfit".

Maybe the 2024 Multi-Species character will allow players to pick traits from each parentage. Then this player choice plus a "Popular Misfit" background can do a decent build for this archetype in 2024.

I appreciate the 2024 approach that allows the player choice to combine any two species. This is important for various concepts. I care about gaming balance so I understant the UA caution when only allowing the traits from one of the parentages. At the same time, to help "flavor cohere mechanics", I feel it is important to find a balanced way to allow players to mix and match traits between parentages.
