I think it is ok if saves are used as perhaps originally intended, as like a last resort defense for something that would otherwise kill you. I believe Gygax had given the example of a knight in a story who survives a dragon's breath against all odds (@Snarf Zagyg I think relayed this example on these boards). But slowly more and more spells required saves.

Well, they fundamentally had three choices: That (or something like it, such as an opposed resistance roll in BRP), just not do things other than damage, or just have them work (never thought the latter was a good idea at least for things with any heft).

The surest sign that someone doesn’t have an argument to make or a leg to stand on is they turn to insults.

Sometimes they've just been around this particular maypole once too often (not even necessarily in the conversation at hand) and don't have the control to walk away, so they just--spout.

Not saying it's good, not saying it's bad...but a lot of folks really want to blur the line between Player and DM.
I'm not disagreeing, but there are things some people/tables do that some people will see as blurring that line and others won't. I figure those things are good for/at the tables where they work, and bad for/at the tables where they don't.

As long as that line is set during session zero, and the group has defined just how much influence over which things the party has, it's not an issue. But once those parameters have been set, people trying to push those boundaries after having already agreed to them do become a problem.

I would say there is some need for that if you've got NPC party members, however, I have seen more than one DM be actively competitive with his players while doing this. I tried to have my NPC party members effectively be comic relief, when doing so. (Dwarf Fighter NPC, to fill out the party. "So, are you cowards going to stand and fight these guys with me?" PCs wisely decide that superior numbers mean retreat is the option. "WAIT FOR ME, YOU COWARDS!")
