The only thing that exceeds the arrogance of youth is the pessimism of old age.

The youth are both wondrous and infuriating because they lack the experience to know what they cannot do.

The old are wise and infuriating because they lack the optimism to realize that things don't have to be the way that they have always been.
There is also the arrogance of old age (thinking that we've seen and done everything) and the pessimism of youth (knowing that all who have come before have already strip-mined the world).

If you're like me, and you're old enough to remember a world without the Internet, and you started playing D&D during the TSR era with the boxed sets and/or the Rules Cyclopedia, I cannot stress this enough:

It doesn't matter. Nobody cares. And my opinions aren't any more (or less) informed because of it. My history and experience with D&D is mine alone, and has zero bearing on the way D&D should play, look, or feel to other people.

I agree that my experience (or yours) has--and should have--no bearing on how anyone else should play, but if someone says something like "How I'm playing 5e is consistent with how I remember playing 1e," that seems as though it might convey some meaningful information.

Yep, context is important. Mostly I'm pushing back against some comments I read in Another ThreadTM that started to reek of elitism. Really gate-keepy stuff like "If you've never programmed a VCR, don't talk to me about D&D. I already know more than you" or whatever.

Miss me with that nonsense.

Was 18 where I grew up, so yeah 21 seems pretty wild.
It feels like drinking culture in U.S. continually gets less manageable. It's like the reputation, and the continual restrictions, just begs people to go wild. It is very chicken and egg if the restrictions cause folks to go wild, or folks going wild causes the restrictions?

Personally, I blame the change to the drinking age to 21 to the concomitant rise in the execrable vodka "martini."

As you correctly noted, the drinking culture in the United States has truly become unmanageable. Soon, people will likely be making vodka martinis with equal parts vermouth (or, probably, Aperol ... because why not?) and replacing the olives with little pineapple and ham skewers.

Yeah I'm not sure. I know growing up, drinking was just a thing for a lot of the guys I hung out with, and my last year of high school (as we all started hitting 18) there was just a lot of it going on. A few of us didnt ever bother, a few of us went off the deep end, one of my buddies put himself in the hospital on his 18th via alcohol poisoning.

My son growing up and hitting 19 (we moved to a different province, age limit) didnt seem too different, but there is more drugs now than we had back then so thats a thing too...
