A sentient version of Chaos Beasts would have been better, but ones that could be shaped and controlled with enough will power like Limbo itself.

Slaads are the worst Alignment paragon race full stop. The rest actually exemplify their alignments. Demons are chaotic and evil, Modrons are lawful and rigid, Devil Lawful and evil, Celestial Eladrin Chaotic and Good, Archos Lawful and Good in behavior, etc..., they act like their alignment.

Slaads have a rigid hierarchy and act as HORRIFYINGLY EVIL as mindflayers, like they supposed to be Chaotic NEUTRAL, they are failures at their purpose.
No they don't
Slaadi are undisciplined and have no formal hierarchy, although weaker slaadi obey stronger ones under threat of annihilation.
The only ones that are evil are Death Slaadi
Death slaadi are suffused with energy from the Negative Energy Plane and exemplify evil’s corruption of chaos, and they take sadistic pleasure in bringing harm to others. They propagate their race by dragooning mobs of red and blue slaadi and invading other planes. Humanoids who survive the incursion become incubators for new slaadi.
The others unless forced into service by Death Slaadi are not particularly hostile even if they tend to enjoy fighting.

I'd day it's rather that they expect that, or for people to graduate to homebrewing quickly.
It's a lot better from their standpoint to sell us fish tacos every quarter than to help us fish for ourselves.
Just so. They are still selling us Adventure Paths, but now they aren't limited to keeping them Faerun adjacent. They also don't have to track continuity and can introduce PC options from across the Multiverse to sell.

Even if they're not directly providing all of the "fish" you want, they're still opening up the river for fishing via opening up the setting on DMsGuild, allowing third party creatives to create and sell content for the setting in a centralized location that would have otherwise been dispersed across a hundred fan forums and reddit threads, if it ever made it past the creator's home table at all - a location that just so happens to also host most, if not all, of the original setting material from previous editions.

Say all you want about WotC's products not being up to whatever standard you wish to hold them by, but let's not pretend that opening up older settings on DMsGuild isn't doing anything to breathe new life into them.
I was thinking along these same lines.

Those who are interested in doing more with the campaigns will seek out more information online, will most likely run into the DM's Guild, and find lots of PDFs! Maybe they'll dig in and find something of interest and make a purchase...maybe even a sweet POD book!

With zero evidence, I think this may be their intent, whether people like it or not. I think it might work for what they want to do, it just won't please those who want all of these other things. But the really awesome thing is: All that other stuff still exists from previous editions.

My players ran into a slaad. They saw it in the distance, on a cliff edge, and it was painting something on an easel.

When they got closer, they could see it was painting them watching it paint them, in greater detail then it could have seen from the distance. And some of the characters had weird or ominous changes, like the void touched wizard had a starry outline. They also did not like the fact that the paladin's head was painted as if it was on fire and half burnt.

They tried to buy the painting. The slaad said "No thanks, I don't care for some, I already have any" and disappeared. They left the painting on the cliff edge as they were scared to touch it.
