Once you bust out SFB or CW, you're looking at spending a few hours resolving the fight. Both of them are excellent games, SFB in particular has a tight set of rules, but designed for quick play they are not and aren't suitable for RPG night. And that's another problem, vehicle combat in games is often too abstract to be satisfying but if you add complexity you lose the people who aren't into combat games.
Federation Commander is the current solution for "SFB takes too long" - it reduces the numbers quite a bit in the fleet mode.

Prior to that, the cadet training manual ships were excellent for doing SFB in shorter, easier options.

I've used the FASA-Trek modality with SFB rules, and had it be both fun and engaging... Oh, and the captain had to sit where he could not see the boards nor the power allocations...
... he was reliant upon helm, nav, comms, and science officer to make the decisions...

No one wants to take your Oxford comma. But insisting it must be used in all sentences at all times is like insisting that cayenne pepper be used in all dishes at all time. It's a tool to be used where appropriate and not fetishized when it's not.
There is no point where using the oxford comma is going to be unclear. There are a huge number of cases where not using it causes clarity loss. Therefore It shouldn't be optional.

Spock's previously unknown human foster sister says "hello!"
SNW is some of the best trek ever... but it's clearly not the same universe as TOS, TAS, and the TOS movies...
I've argued for a long time that the "Prime" of the Prime Universe is "1st derivative" as is used in math, not "original". SNW is Prime universe, is out of continuity with TOS (especially Spock+Chapel)... but it does also explain a few bits of TOS with a wink and nod...

SNW may not even be the same universe as Disco given what we saw of Klingons...

I stopped trying to find SFB players about twenty years ago and haven't seen Federation Commander in the wild or know of anyone who has played it. It's too bad because SFB has some of the most clear and concise rules I have ever seen. It's one of the only games I can recall playing where any dispute over the rules was easily solved by consulting the rule book. Do the rules say you can drain batteries to raise shields during the phase? No? Then you can't.
