Yeah, surprise attacking obvious bosses often misses neat dialog and delicious approval. Makes Assassins weep.
Trouble is, it can also screw with even much smaller encounters if there's a dialogue trigger on approach. It just seems to mess with the combat trigger, and can lead to the enemy getting a whole slew of turns in response to your supposed surprise attack. I had issues with it in encounters such as the windmill-gnome goblins, and the couriers cornered by gnolls.

It might have already been mentioned, but I ended Act 1 with over 2,000 supplies on Tactician. I'm a bit obsessive about checking cupboards, but even if you're not as anal as me you'll probably be fine on supplies.

But if there's ever any concern, you can respec a companion into a goodberry dispenser. :P

Yeah, supplies aren't really a meaningful limitation in the game at present. While I do usually auto-select supplies when resting, I occasionally try to tailor them to the moment - like, is this camp visit more of a picnic, or a barbecue, or a boozy party?

Sometimes I curate what supplies to use purely on what would make a balanced and fun meal. I've even done wine pairings.

I always auto-selected, then curated back down to 80. Then I accidentally ate my Owlbear Egg. Oops!

I had no idea it could be eaten.

That spectator fight is a real pain. I don't think you can start it without being surprised, and it just causes havoc during that surprise round, usually paralyzing someone and getting crit damage on its bite when it does. Plus, it keeps un-petrifying drow to join it (thankfully they get un-charmed if you damage them). I finally decided that a few smokepowder barrels would do the trick (it usually retreated to one particular spot), so one fire arrow shot and it was down to around 10 hp (and its drow allies were close enough to be damaged slightly and un-charmed). Still a messy fight, though!
