But what would we gain by making such a change? If anything, I think it would be a step backwards in terms of Quality of Life. It'd most likely lead to something like the Starter Syndrome in Pokémon games: You like your starter, so you mostly fight with them, so they end up getting most of the XP and being ahead of your team (and even more ahead of your boxed Pokemon). Then you hit a fight that hard counters your starter, and suddenly you find that your other Pokemon are underlevelled, so you have to go back and grind them (and that's the best case scenario, you might softlock yourself by getting to an area where going back and grinding other Pokemon is no longer possible, and your team can't handle the challenge, so there's no clear way out). And this problem would be exacerbated in BG3 since there isn't really an area of infinitely-summoned enemies for you to "grind" underleveled party members. So you just lock people in to their active party for little to no benefit.
Interesting approach. I guess I would say an adventuring party isn’t usually like Pokémon. You pick your party and then run with them. Different parties, different play throughs. You might make small or temporary substitutions but I’d be surprised if that was from the core companions. After all if you want to respec them you can for a few gold and get a whole new build.

What it would give you is the opportunity to run through with a smaller group and reach a higher level - even if spells are still limited to level 6 and you have to use multiclassing to go above 12.

The BG forums were filled with ideas, tips and builds for solo play and it was a really popular past time for those who had already completed the game. Managing a large party can be a chore particularly from a game speed point and it can be a lot of fun to run with 1 or 2. That only works if they level faster.

I dunno man, I'm switching companions pretty regularly - especially when one companion seems more plot-relevant than the others in a certain area. I wouldn't have liked to go to the Crèche without Lae'zel, and I would've liked it even less if, when I took her with me for story reasons, she was severely underleveled because I normally use Karlach instead of her. I guess it's a matter of different playstyles.

Yeah. Absolutely. Different playstyles.

I wonder if it will be moddable eventually.

I'm not sure about varied XP rates, but reaching level 20 with multiclass is already modded in!

It apparently still can't do spell slots beyond a 12th-level caster, though.

Makes sense. Great news that this is an option!

Fingers crossed solo XP is a possibility.

[Edit] interestingly when combined with Fast To Level 6 and the double XP version of the mod you referenced then my dreams of soloing with a Fighter/Mage/Thief could be on the cards!

I am about 2/3rds of the way through Act 2 right now. I haven't done most of the Moonrise area quests or the Gauntlet of Shar, but I've done practically everything else on the map. My party is halfway to level 9. I'm not sure what level I should be right now, but I feel pretty powerful right now. Most fights are a breeze, with most of the party members barely taking any damage. I can't remember the last time a character died in a fight.

My custom character is a Githyanki Abjuration Wizard that I'm using as a Gish. If Bladesinger was an option, I definitely would have played that instead, but Abjuration Wizard in medium armor dual wielding magically finesse longswords is the next best thing. Haste has been extremely useful, as have a few of the magic items that increase the viability of this build. I've already gotten my Intelligence up to 20 (start out with 17, increased to 19 at level 4, ate the hag's hair to increase to 20) and have the gloves that increase your Dexterity to 18. I have a 20 for AC (22 with Haste) from Adamantine Scale Mail and the Cloak of Protection. This level I got the dual wielder feat, allowing me to dual wield the two finesse longswords in the game. My current plan for the final feat at level 12 is Medium Armor Master to increase my AC again and finally remove the stealth penalty, but that might change depending on what items I get in the future.

My standard party is Shadowheart (respecced into a Life Cleric, wielding the Blood of Lathander and Shield of Devotion, wearing +1 Plate Armor) and Astarion (Thief subclass, dual wielding magic hand crossbows with Sharpshooter, AC of 17). I switch between Lae'zel and Karlach for the party's main frontline fighter. My Lae'zel is an Eldritch Knight that has a 20 for Strength, Great Weapon Master, a 19 for AC (Adamantine Splint plus the Wondrous Gloves) and the Githyanki Greatsword. My Karlach Bear Wildheart has the magical halberd that deals extra lightning damage, the Polearm Master feat, and magical half-plate. Lae'zel has been slightly less useful in combat than Karlach, but I keep using her because my character is romancing her.

Most encounters are pretty easy and I'm playing on the standard difficulty. Next game I'm definitely going to play on Tactician to see how much more difficult it is.
