That you don't make it a power. You talk to your GM and describe what you're trying to do. If they think it would definitely work, it works. If they think it definitely doesn't work, it doesn't. If they're not sure, an appropriate ability (with appropriate modifiers) is performed.

You know, the gameplay loop.

So I agree with that 100%. It's one of the many reasons I love Shadowdark.

But as you know perfectly well, D&D has drifted toward the end of the design spectrum where you don't improvise and adjudicate, you press buttons on your character sheet. That's how people play D&D. It's one reason I've stopped playing D&D.

Would you say you should apply that to say, a rogue's Sneak Attack or Evasion abilities?

And I've started hating the D&D fandom because people keep using this stupid 'button pressing' narrative to describe 'having actual reliable capability as opposed to leaving it all to DM whims'.
