I got the distinct impression tonight that I had wandered into the next tier region. That gnoll fight was brutal. I went back a couple saves and decided to focus on the druid plot to level everyone up.
I lost this fight stumbling into it. Then I came back and tried to sneak attack. Nope. Then I came back and tried to sneak to higher ground.

Spoiler part: And got spotted and talked to the Flind. It turns out this is a social encounter, not fully a combat encounter. You can talk the Flind into attacking the other gnolls. With high ground and that, I won.
Then save because some interesting rolls and role playing follow immediately.

So, I've only two things left to do in Act 1: Auntie Ethel and Adamantine Forge. Found the Forge, got the pieces, just deciding what to make. Not sure how to deal with Ethel ... I couldn't go get through the door and backed up to an earlier save where I've yet to go into the valley. Would like to save the brothers, but I feel like that's impossible.
I killed Auntie Ethel yesterday. Heck of a fight. I haven’t found the brothers.

Spoiler:
Well, it’s possible they were among the folks guarding Auntie. I killed 4 people who were clearly charmed by her, but I killed ‘em all. Apparently she has a sister and coven that may seek revenge, but she was a truly evil Grimms fairytale type villain. At the end she tried to talk her way out, but that was a no for me.

Are you talking about Priestess Gut?

Can't remember the full dialogue chain, but you can get her to take you to her private room. Where if you have her out, there's no one to notice it.
The trouble for me is my PC is a half elf, so the Sleep potion didn’t work on me (I later learned what it was from spoilers) and just hollered for help. I shutdown at that point, not wanting to fight everyone at once.

Maybe I can have a non-elvish character talk to Gut. Or smoke powder, that sounds fun.

Anyone know how to get the ogres to show up near you? I want to use them to mop up the goblin temple.
Not for sure, but by dialoging with the smart ogre in the Blighted Village and offering them all they can eat goblins, he gave me his horn to call him for the big fight.

But I haven’t tried the big Selunite goblin fight yet, so I don’t know for sure if they’ll actually come and help.

So I set off a trap in the old ruins and now any time I go back in it is all fireballs, all day. Is there a way to turn that off without dying?
I did that too, but I had finished looting before I set it off, so I left it on.

We seem to have a similar play style - both get in a lot of trouble!

If anyone is interested, in getting ready for “the big goblin battle”, my current party is 4th level and all as close as I can get to what I think their original build plans were - no respec, no dual class.
Shadowheart. I think we need the artifact. And my PC is in love with her and thinks he can convert her very slowly from evil, so.
Gale. Hard to imagine a big fight without a wizard, and he has been my lock and trap opener as well.
Karlach. Bear build.
My PC is a half-elf cleric of Helm with the intellectual background as Gale, because that‘s what I felt like playing seems very survivable going in intentionally with no spoilers in character creation. Imagine my surprise at meeting Shadowheart.

We’re Very Good friends (except Karlach is neutral) and I play basically Lawful Good except going shoot to kill on the Auntie Ethel & crew.

I’ve adventured with all the initial companions and Wyll seems the weakest. If I could have 5, I’d alternate Lae-zel and Astarion depending on the mission. I suspect Astarion and I will eventually go our separate ways.

I guess if I finally do the goblin fight and succeed, for 5th level my PC should multiclass to Paladin?

Has anyone tried the more than 4 party members? Any comments or advice on that?

Reference to the Portal fight.

Gale, or someone dropping fireball is key.
Shadowheart shooting AoE arrows.
Front line hold at portal.

I finally beat it. 3rd try. 9HP left in the portal.

I thought Fog Cloud would keep the portal safe from arrows but nope.

A good helping of fireballs, exploding barrels l,
a daylight spell, and Turn Undeads pulled it off.

Right but every time I used it they showed up but way too far away to help (they just aggroed a bunch of goblins who weren't fighting).

I finally managed to get them into a moderately helpful position but they disappear as soon as you drop out of initiative so still meh. Better than having to fight them myself, I guess.
