D&D (2024) The new warlock (Packet 7)

Sorry if i missed it, but what do people think of the nerfing of the Warlock ability to switch invocations on levelling? It's now gone from the 2024 Warlock but was in the 2014 version.

Wow I didn't notice that. Part of me can understand that to a small degree from an rp standpoint but I am a player and a dm who feels that if a pc is not enjoying part of their character then they should always be able to change that, be it a feat, a spell, a cantrip what ever.

I mean I'm basically inclined to agree that it doesn't really break much (I think the Feat-based version would break stuff but not the 3-level version), but honestly I will be surprised if WotC changes the multi-classing rules at all, because of the 70% issue.
Agree with you on the feat version. As for the 3 level version, again, I think WotC might have a tiny loophole on the 70% rule since each UA states that classes will receive final polish for power-level and multi-classing. I think they could argue that a change to the MC rule as a whole could fall under that caveat, especially since MCing is an optional rule to begin with. If they're worried about it hitting the 70% threshold, they just make the change and rip the band-aid.

Probably flew under a lot of radars - certainly did mine. I’d say I’m not a fan of that change, but it’s not a dealbreaker. I’d probably just allow it anyway.

Yes for some reason they didn't mention it in their highlights notes on changes made.

Personally, I don't get it. Who was complaining about that rule?

I would guess it’s because of the pact boons being invocations in this packet. Because some invocations now rely on having other invocations as prerequisites, so if you took pact of the blade at 1st level, then took thirsting blade at 5th level, they don’t want you swapping out pact of the blade at 6th and being left with an invocation you no longer meet the prerequisite for.

While the 70% issue is very real, emphasizing it here probably overstates the community and developers' appetite for restrictions on multiclassing.

While a desire for such restrictions comes up often on this forum, it's not something I've ever encountered "in the wild". Nor do I recall the developers ever expressing the view that such restrictions would be desirable. Meanwhile, popular actual plays feature plenty of multiclass characters that wouldn't be possible under a more restrictive ruleset.

Many players, myself included, enjoy the current system of freeform multiclassing. I understand that other players have strongly felt objections to it, but I don't see the evidence that these objections (let alone views of how to address them) are shared by even a simple majority of the community.
