That's legit weird to me. You can't express your dislike for something because other people used their dislike of that thing decades ago as a means of bigotry. What? So everyone has to love country music or they're classist? Screw that. That's even dumber than hating country music because you're looking down your nose at rural people. Country music has sucked since they stopped singing about unions.

I like some country and folk music but agree fighting class or culture battles over what media people like or don't is pretty dumb. People like or don't like music because of how much it appeals to them. People can read what they want into that, but it often just comes down to what melodic patterns and chords resonate with a person.

But to my understanding there is good modern country out there as well. Sturgill Simpson, for example.

Now, I'm mostly not a fan of Country music as a genre, though I'm more fond of some related genres like Bluegrass. But there are certainly some exceptions, some classic Johnny Cash tunes, Hank Williams Sr., etc. Which I mostly wasn't aware of when I was a kid in the 80s parroting a virtue signal at least partially rooted in classism.

You know how only even numbered Star Trek movies are good?

The same applies to the Williams family, Hank Sr rules, Hank Jr sucks and Hank III rules.

EDIT: For the record, I actually like the Star Trek the Motionless Picture a ton. So, you know, YMMV.

Disco was mostly in the past (though I remember "Disco sucks!"), but I also remember being a kid parroting that "I like all music except Rap and Country" line, not realizing the sociological and demographic underpinnings of that meme statement.

Being a rock and metal person, and coming from a family of musicians, I am supposed to hate disco, but I have to admit some of the best rock songs have appropriated elements of disco

That said, if people don't like rock, don't like rap, or whatever I think we don't really need to read too much into that. Especially now when the walls between many of those genres aren't as rigid at all. Also while there were certainly those kinds of things going on in quarters back in the day, it was also often just related to what clique a person was in

There was a place here that had "Chicago Dogs" on the menu. It was a hot dog with pickle relish, diced onions, and diced tomatoes. !?!?! And it's not like they didn't even know - Sonic 1/2 mile away has had actual ones forever.

This is why I added the 'this establishment' clause. In some bizarro world, sure Canadian pizza can have Pineapple, but the point stands.

There is definitely good country music out there. I think Patsy Cline would have loved Kacey Musgrave's music, for instance.

The notion that "today's music is all terrible" is largely about brain plasticity. Whatever music you liked when your brain "set" in your mid-20s is what you think of as "the best" music. (Yes, there are people who firmly believe that N'Sync is the greatest music ever created.)

This is why your parents hated your music and you hate your kids' music. In every era, there was excellent, good, average and bad music being created.
