D&D (2024) Playtest 7 survey is now live.

Yeah I really wish they’d have included a Swordmage in 5e. They got it so incredibly spot on right in 4e, and never gave it a non-defender version in Essentials for some reason, and I really think swordmage is an even bigger missed opportunity than warlord, assassin, or psion, in 5e.
Like one of the last things Mike Mearls did as head of D&D was say on his streaming show that he would show off a draft Dword Mage he had worked up. Then there no more streaming shows.

I actually prefer the Duskblade/Magus to the 4e swordmage, though the 4e swordmage is cool af too. The lack of classes is definitely the thing which I hate the most about this edition.

Though I also wouldn't want class numbers to go anything close to old class number levels. I used to point to Pathfinder 2e as an 'ideal' number of classes. But now that system has too many imo.

Even though a swordmage is the class I want in 5e the most, if I could only pick one it would be the Warlord. As it's objectively needed more.

Therein lies the issue that leads to wotc not wanting to add classes.

I don’t think we will ever see a class named warlord in D&D proper again, but I do think someday we will have a marshal or captain or paragon or whatever, that is fully martial.

If I could, I’d add swordmage (by whatever name), warlord, psion, and assassin (I don’t care it’s a subclass).

My list would be warlord, swordmage, psion, and pet-class (pathfinder calls it a summoner but that's an awful name). And maybe some kind of 'become the monster' type class as 5e doesn't do that at all.

Also artificer as we all know that WotC is going to brush the class under the rug and pretend it never existed for 1dnd.

Summoner and becoming the monster could be a Binder. Use the same balance notes of summoning a bit guy to turn into a big guy.

We don't at all know that, and I very strongly doubt it.
