D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

They didn't have a PHB 2, DMG 2 or any other numbered books because based on their research people found it confusing.
not sure why that is more confusing than having a Xanathar and a Tasha, but if that is what their data tells them…

In any case we have more than the DMG and PHB, even if that is not named PHB2 and DMG2

They don't invest a ton into D&D? They just spent how much buying DndBeyond? They're investing in a VTT just for funzies?
no they are not, but I see a difference between investing in the TTRPG and spending hundreds of millions on a VTT and movie

I don't buy it. No, they aren't plowing a ton of money into it, it's not a major product for them because even as the most successful TTRPG ever it still pales in comparison to the money made on things like video games.
or lost… see HAT, let’s hope for them their VTT does better

No, Colville is out to Lunch on this one. It is an intentional strategy thst has been been explicitly outlined for a decade...and has worked. WotC not making a particular product Matt Colville might want doesn't matter if the books theybdonrelease sell better than a PHhB2 ever could.

For goodness sake, Tasha's has outsold the 3.5 PHB!
THey why dont they make more of that, even of a slow release schedule if that is the demand, why dont they make more books like that is my question, people say its "because they are good stewards who want wants best for the game" I dont think thats reality, their is a demand for more options and stuff, they do not release stuff like that, why are they opting to make less money.

Specifically, customers in general see "PHB 2" and think that means it replaces the old busted PHB 1 that nobody needs anymore...because that's how most people engage with video games like Madden if Call of Duty. So they found people got frustrated and angry that they could not get thw game going with juat the PHB 2 or 3...

Literally people are complaining about the back to back release of three books and the marketing pace is exhausting.
that is because book releases were pushed back, so now they sit close together, not because there are some many releases throughout the year

An organization doesn't more than double the size of its studio when mothballing.
WotC has dramatically expanded the rules creators, writers, editors and artists who are full time employees focused on D&D the game.

This shouldn't be news to anyone who has looked at a product over the past few years.
The only way to think it's not true is to intentionally ignore data so that you can trend on social media.

There is a demand, but how much of one? Crawford recently explained their strategy is to release products at a pace where people can reasonably pick them up and play before more products come. We are in fact in the middle of a big product gkut right now, two books just came out and two more are out soon.

Spending more money to release more books doesn't mean that you get more money, because people will buy fewer books.

Colville's take is so out of touch thst I almost wondrous if he means it or is trying to troll engagement...?

Maybe. It would explain a few head scratchers. But, as pointed out by Justin Alexander, this isn’t new news…this is old news. Ten-year-old news at this point. And production is increasing.
yeah, I guess they all understand why it was like that 10 years ago, they are just wondering why after the massive success over those 10 years, so little has changed about the approach
