D&D General Is DnD being mothballed?

Maybe. They're two different situations. I wouldn't characterize Morrus as elitist - far from it. So it seems more likely that you took his (possibly slightly overblown) expertise-post stronger than he meant it. For example, he didn't put himself at the top. Just AMONG the top, which is probably true.
"I'm as close to an expert on this exact topic as there is in the world" strikes me as "the top" rather than "among the top," but what can I say? I'm no expert. 🤷‍♂️

That's not quite what that means in context with the rest of the post. It still means "among the top" - which he is. Heck, "close to an expert" suggests that he's not even an expert - just nearly one - and that there's not many people who are at that level or higher, but leaves room for there to be.

At any rate, this is a silly aside. Let's drop it, shall we?

No, I disagree with your interpretation, and think you're reading more into it than is there.

Happily.

Other way around: SCAG used the leftovers of the Elemental Evil book and, apparently, an intended Out of the Abyss tie-in: their initial product strateg, which was scrapped bwfore itnreally saw acruob, was to have a big Adventure book and thena crunch filled tie-in to go with it. And SCAG is hugely successful: it's been in print for 8 years (longer than 3.X combined!) and is still selling.
Thanks for clarifying.

Well, kind of. I had a guess what you meant but…I’m still not totally clear on it.
I’ve rephrased it like three times now, but I guess I can try again… As someone who used to play a lot of magic very seriously, my perception of what an “average magic player” is was evidently distorted, compared to what Mark Rosewater meant by it, which seems to have been people who play “kitchen table Magic,” assembling decks out of whatever happens to be in their collections, which they might supplement with the occasional purchase of some booster packs or preconstructed deck or whatever.

Would "expert" be the top, and being as close to an expert below that? I've always understood that idiom to mean someone who is just below an actual expert.

I'd say that this digression has gone on longer than was intended, and certainly further than is necessary. I'm happy to pick this up in PMs, if you'd like.

Sorry, I just noticed it. For me it was really about the phrase: "I am as close to an expert..." I've always taken that mean I am not an expert, but perhaps on par with some experts (or their abouts). You seemed to understand it differently, so I was wondering if my understanding was wrong all of these years.

It more means that the speaker has expertise in a niche field (like RPG business history) thst doesn't exactly have PhD certifications.

It's not wrong, but the way he phrased it as "I'm as close to an expert as anyone in the world." to me implies that there aren't any real experts, and among those who are close to being an expert, he's at the top.
