One of the reasons I'm unlikely to impose species restrictions in my games (or more accurately, create a set list of allowed options) is that often my players will come up with something that I'd never thought of, that ends up being super cool. I like seeing how things play that I haven't had a chance to run myself.

One of the most interesting characters someone has played in a game I ran was a Kalashtar, which I never would have seen if I'd created a fixed list for my players as I wasn't too familiar with the Eberron.

I'm sure WotC would love to pretend this sidebar doesn't exist, and I don't expect it to be there in any form in the new not-edition. But they can't erase it from 5e!
Yeah I think this is true. However why?

Tastes change. What you will probably find is that folks who don’t have as much of a tie to older editions are happy to lean into more fantastical/whimsical like this and it’s fine.

Which is exactly why I think individual table need to have the ability to…wait for it…exclude what they want for the flavor they want.

Yep, I'll have to look for new players in the retirement homes soon (of course, in about 15-20 years I'll be joining them...).
I am DMing my kids a bit! Oh wait the party included a goblin, a kenku and a fruit person!

Ah well…

I am still pals with my friends of old…we will go down in flames together!

Excluding stuff, for whatever reason, is rapidly becoming socially unacceptable.

If I had kids, I would teach them to play D&D the "right way". ;) (j/k) :D
There are some traditional elements in there!

I have some encounters best avoided and others where strategy is required.

But seeing them excited is just a joy! There is time to kill hope with poison and traps later! I kid I kid
