Today I realized that, while gyro and gyro are spelled the same, the two words have very little conceptual overlap.
If you are talking about the gyro sandwich and the gyroscope, the reason a gyro sandwich is called that is because the meat is roasted on a vertical skewer that rotates, just like a gyroscope. (Interestingly, the dictionary says the word comes from ancient Greek gyros, meaning "ring" or "round", so now we have a different problem! But the semantic progression is still pretty clear.)

If you are talking about some other kind of gyro, then I don't know!
 



I don't know much about gyros, but I loved Gyruss as a kid!

Whoah... I've eaten many a gyro assembled from meat hot off a spinning spit, but I never made the connection between that and the the other gyro.
Today I learned!
