I'm curious about the Vecna: Eve of Ruin situation, as it was discussed as being "the first adventure using the new rules" and definitely seems like it's coming this year - but the new DMG and MM might not be out this year? So Vecna uses "rules" that maybe won't have been published yet?

I mean, I realize that's exactly what happened in 2014 with Hoard of the Dragon Queen, but that seems like a thing we probably should have learned not to do?

Have they ever not shipped all the corebooks of for-the-sake-of-this-discussion a new edition in a single year?

The fact that we have seen zero UA yet for DMG or MM material makes me skeptical that we're getting those books this year (unless they've decided not to put them through UA).

A good reason to be skeptical of people insisting the MM and DMG won't be out this year.

Other than the D&D Next releases, have they ever put monsters out in a UA? We already know what they're doing with monsters in 2024, or at least, those of us who own Monsters of the Multiverse do.

As for the DMG, they've told us that they want to test some systems, but if it's the third book released (which, if memory serves, has been the way it's gone as far back as 1E), they still could put that out in a UA at least through late spring and be fine.

Well, the old MM and DMG will still work with any new Adventure, frankly. Also, they might drop an updated SRD at the same time as the PHB, even if the full MM and DMG aren't fully finalized for print.

There is zero indication that the MM or DMG will not be be out by December.

They did put out one DMG UA already: they may do more, and suggested they might. Plenty of time to put out a couple before books need to go to print for Q3 or Q4.
Shouldn't this be viewed similarly to DND Next, though, as far as the extent of the playtesting?
No, not really, the 2024 rules already have a solid base starting woth the 2014 rules. Not the same sort of thing at all.

Yeah...I'm not holding my breath on that one. There was a two-year-plus lag between the 5E PHB release and the 5E SRD release.
Yes, but they already have most of the 2024 SRD already written. The changes to the axtual core rules per the latest UA playtests are about 5 pages. Given the importance of the SRD to free on ramping to Beyond, that will be a priority this time.

1E actually took 3 years to get all three core books out (MM in '77, PHB in '78, DMG in '79) but other than that, no, it's always been all three books in the same year.

Not sure, however, if the print runs have ever been as big for the core books as these will be. P sure they haven't.
