My absolute favorite would be apple fritters. I guess you folks call them bear claws? Second favorite would be Dutchies.

To be fair though, while Japan has some absolutely top notch bakeries for pasteries, their donuts suck badly. Massively overpriced and just all around bad. Although the Okinawa donuts are freaking fantastic. And surprisingly, tofu donuts are pretty darn good too. But, the regular donuts here? Yeah, not good.

You reminded me of the other sweet pastry I like besides french crullers: cream puffs. The best cream puffs I've had were all Japanese bakeries: in Japan, Taiwan, Vancouver, and New York. Taiwanese bakeries are heavily influenced by Japan and also tend to have good cream puffs even though I don't care for most Taiwanese sweet pastries (though I do like a lot of savory stuff, like curry puffs, baked curry donuts, char siu [BBQ pork] buns, etc.)

In fairness, it's not just nostalgia.

If you're old enough, you actually had better donuts at Dunkies. They used to make them fresh at the store, now they are brought to the store from central locations. In addition, they make them in a much more ... healthy ... way, which makes them taste terrible.

Short version- if you had Dunkies in, say, the '90s, and you ate it now, it's not just nostalgia. They do taste different ... like cardboard.

DunKings- Drink our good coffee, 'cuz our donuts ain't .... expletive.

Now I'm on a mission to find a good, local, non-chain, classic donut shop to test your hypothesis.

I'm glad not everyone read too much into my stupid joke about D&D being better 10+ years ago, when it was the same D&D. I guess I should have put a sarcasm tag. Mea culpa.

Stupid Roku only showed one free season on Brett's Sherlock Holmes. And so BritBox joins Amazon, Disney+, Netflix, and Paramount+.

One of the things that was a green flag for my wife when we were dating was my complete Brett Sherlock Homes collection. I should also get the compete Miller and Cumberbatch Collections as well.
