Our Physical Fitness

Any interest in reviving this? I'd be interested in seeing what kind of training splits and diets y'all are following.

By the end of the spring semester, I found I was tired of tracking calories, realizing it had led me to a lot of yo-yo dieting. I would cut calories and trim fat, but that would lead to bingeing. More frustrating, I found it would lead to dips in my performance at the gym, disincentivizing the whole endeavor. Accordingly, I've been on a bit of a cycle where I lift, eat, and feel good but put on a little belly fat in the process. Then I try to diet it off, which works for a minute, but then I crash and spend still more time trying to diet off what I did. In the meantime, I don't make meaningful strength or muscle gains because I'm calorically just treading water.

I'm now trying to simply track protein intake and autoregulate my carbs around that. I'm still not eating smart, but I feel SO. MUCH. BETTER in the gym. Do any of y'all do autoregulation? Any strategies? I'd be inclined to simply expel any and all junk food from the house, but the spouse and kids would (rightfully) rebel. :P

My biggest challenge with fitness (and DnD ... life in general, lol), is I'm not good with keeping notes and tracking my workouts. That and diet.

That said, I have been keeping active. I went out to a free salsa dance in the park, bike at least 20km twice a week, and hit the gym for weights and stretching. Trying to improve my flexibility and endurance has become a focus.

Do people use fitness apps? I only use a mapping app to track my bike rides, thinking I should get another.

I track my diet with Macro Factor. Which has been a huge boon for me.

I'm not tracking workouts at the moment. I will do again soon. I've used Stronger by Science work plan.

I lost a good amount of weight over the last couple years but had trouble with the last 10% or so. I got a subscription to MacroFactor and started tracking my calories, protein and fiber and knocked out that last bit and then have used it to maintain my current weight.

I pay attention to and minimize my carbs, and assume since I'm eating less carbs ,I'll get more protein as a proportion of my food. Type II diabetic etc etc. I don't bother to track fat. Sometimes, if I have an option, I'll avoid butter and have Earth Balance brand food lube.

I also try to cook up some skinless boneless chicken thighs over the weekend (not this one) so when I come home after working out I have one with my "normal" breakfast food, slathered in home-made sanbal olek 🌶️

I have high cholesterol issues, but otherwise I'm fine (not overweight, blood pressure good, blood chemistry normal). So I eat a high-fiber, low-calorie diet, and I take a niacin supplement every day. So for me and my activity level, that's 2000 calories and 40g of fiber (10g soluble fiber) per day.

I need to take a niacin supplament, but it causes my glucose to skyrocket. My diabetes doctor told me why from way back, but I forgot what causes it

I track workouts with apps like Strong and Hevy, which are pretty good for what they are. I'll have to check Macro Factor out.

Made it to the gym. That’s something, right?
