D&D General (SPOILERS for Vecna: Eve of Ruin) Are My Standards Too High for Adventures?

2nd Edition wasn't a golden age for adventure design, either. There's a reason those "best adventures of all time" are overwhelmingly dominated by adventures from 1st Ed and older - for all of their flaws, that's as good as it gets. Each edition since has had one or two classics (which were themselves often remakes), a bare handful of good adventures, and then a load of... other adventures.
I’ve played and DM’d a lot of adventures over the years, and pretty much every single one of the classics and I think there’s a lot of nostalgia working its charms in regards to their status. My best two player experiences were Dungeon of the Mad Mage and Temple of Elemental Evil. Both of them needed lots of love from the DM to make them work.

They would likely have to reduce staff / salaries to make a real difference in price. I would prefer not to go there.

No, WotC pays for the paper, ink, and printing in bulk, it really doesn't cost that much to make these products and the rpg team doesn't get payed crazy money either. They could charge less, they've shown that with the 1D&D core books, they choose not to.

Most of the MSRP goes to to the retailer and distributors, not to WotC. Tge margins are thinner than you seem to think.

The core books are still at a lower price, but they will make up for that in bulk numbers for WotC and retailers alike.

Really? Keep on the borderlands 1 day no planning. Most of this was pretty basic and most were under 40 pages. Now it’s 300 pages 📄 f a meandering plot with mini encounters to fill a plot. I’d take 3/4 and f those modules vs rime of frost maiden or storm king’s thunder
Keep on the Borderlands?

More like Keep on the Bored-erlands.

Seriously, I think a lot of players would find that style of play underwhelming today outside of a one shot.

If you can run Keep on the Borderlands with no prep, then you can run a given Chapter from those books in a similar fashion.

Sure, you could do KotB without planning. But it would be garbage, just like a modern adventure with no planning.

Of course, as kids, we tended to be too undiscerning to notice.
