Just for fun, I’m gonna speculate on a possible villainous subclass for each class…

Bard: Whispers
Barbarian: Something new?
Cleric: Death
Druid: Spores?
Fighter: Something new?
Monk: Long Death
Paladin: Blackguard
Ranger: Swarmkeeper?
Rogue: Assassin
Sorcerer: Shadow
Warlock: Undying, or maybe Hexblade
Wizard: Necromancer
I don't think we need one for each class. I barely think they needed to separate them as is (a necromancer or assassin is too evil for the PHB, but a Fiend Warlock is okay?)

I'm going to make a prediction here. There will be zero "villain subclasses" in the DMG. It was a kind of half-hearted throwback to 3e when the 2014 DMG did it, and it was never picked up on in further 5e releases. So the Revised DMG is just going to do away with them entirely. They don't want to encourage using PC stats for NPC villains as a default.

Instead, we've already been told that the MM will have an expanded section of humanoid NPC statblocks. That's where we'll get Necromancers and the like, using purely NPC mechanics.

That's my prediction. The "evil" subclasses will all end up in the next "Guide to Everything" that comes out amongst the other subs to be revised.

I hope Goblins aren't in the PHB. I'd rather it be in a supplement as they did with Volos or Mordenkainens books.
Outside of D&D, goblins have had an enormous surge in popularity in the past decade, both inside gaming and without. If they're not in this PHB, they'll be in the next one.
