They could also on-board more of the BG3 players by announcing a BG3 sourcebook for 2025, complete with reprinting the githyanki, a gazetteer of the region, new magic, monsters, etc. I would be pleasantly surprised if they do so.
Including all the environmental effects or at least a loose framework for people who can’t or don’t want to freestyle that kind of thing.

I had another thought on this subject that I want to share - it's not just a matter of "matching" BG3 that putting the Gith into the PHB would make sense for - it's also a matter of making D&D more exclusively D&D. Any fantasy RPG can have Elves, Dwarves, Orcs, & Goblins. Only D&D can have Githyanki. They're clearly leaning into IP these days (and they oughtta, it just makes good sense).

That, and they seem to be adding psionic subclasses as a late-day addition - and who better to represent that addition than the Gith? BG3 is just the thing that makes it not a weird choice, and comes with a very large audience, but it's not the only reason to add the Gith.

(I'm not sure they WILL, but it's a good idea all the same).

The problem with that is they won't want to put Gith into the SRD if its that exclusive, so that makes it less likely. On the other hand D&D stole the Gith from I think JRR Martin (could have the wrong writer), so maybe.

Elves, Humans, Dwarves, Orcs, Halflings, Gnomes, Dragonborn, Tieflings and Goliaths, Aasimar have all either been in the 3e SRD, or in Goliaths case is something you can't trademark (Biblical Name).

I'm sorry. WHAT?
The term "Githyanki" as an alien race that otherwise have nothing to do with the D&D race was first used in a GRRM novel, Dying of the Light.

Charlie Stross, at the time a teenaged D&D fan but who would later go on to be a sci-fi novelist of his own renown (primarily the Laundry Files novels), took the name but little else when he submitted the Githyanki as monsters to the Fiend Folio. Stross is also responsible for the Slaad and a few other monsters IIRC.
