D&D (2024) What should be the power level or power budget of 1st level feat in 2024?

power level of 1st level feat

Horwath

Legend
Simple question.

Should 1st level feat have more or less impact on character creation?

if it's a half-feat level than people that do not want feats will be more satisfied as it will be only a single instance of feat choice in game and with that power budget it's just inflated background feature from 2024.

if it's a full feat worth then people that do like feats will be more happy and there is more creative room for 1st level feats as they can be more versatile with more than one or two effects that they bring to the new character.

but what ever is going to be, those feats and all feats now that we are talking about must be more balanced with each other.

Skilled or Crafter is not really in same league with Lucky or Tough.

3rd option would be similar to 3.5e regional feats that are limited to 1st level and you can only have ONE of those feats. Maybe humans could be with two as their special racial power.

In order to be "compatible" with all the old adventures, a first level feat has to be weak.
like they are now compatible?
biggest thing I hope to have from 2024 MM is fixed CR ratings.

also one of the most popular house rules for 5E is extra feat at 1st level and that didn't broke anything that wasn't broken already.

If you have good CR system sorted, you can give everyone 3 feats at 1st level and just calculate party level as 1 level higher.

3 feats is way stronger than 1 level higher though. Plus those feats would probably synergize.

At that point you should just start you campaign at a higher level.

maybe, 2 feats are one level worth, give or take, so it could be level and a half.

and starting at higher level has it's own set of benefits/problems.

1 feat power horizontal.
Or
1/2 feat vertical.

1st level Feats should about gaining options
4th level Feats should be about boosting options.
