D&D (2024) D&D species article

You really don't get it do you? It has nothing to do with half elves. It is the concept that members of one species (i.e. race) can be better (e.g. more charming) than members of another species that is racist.
Dwarves have Tremorsense over Humans, Elves have Darkvision and heightened Perception over humans. Every species is better than another at something.

Does that not count because humans are not worse at it but lack the ability altogether? What about Perception then?

Also shout out to Dwarves for literally losing half of their racial features in onednd. They're getting gutted.
Yeah I'm kind of surprised there isn't more outcry. It seems like Elves are getting to keep basically everything (I mean, Wood Elves lose out a bit, but only them), and they had quite a lot - they even get to keep a bloody skill, which otherwise seems FORBIDDEN!!!

But Dwarves? Nah mate. They'll take 120ft Darkvision and they'll like it! Because the rest of your kit is pretty much gone!

I suspect when people see all the statblocks side-by-side there will be a bit "HEY WHAT ARE YOU TRYING TO PULL!".

Because as it is, your species choice is basically an afterthought to building your character, and yet for years one of the most common phrases associated with DnD was ‘pick your race and class’, if it continues the way it’s going it’ll soon end up as ‘pick your class and background’ which IMO doesn’t have half the same fantasy kick to it.
compared to class, species was always an afterthought. With the separation into species and background (for the combined same impact) that means species becomes less important, that is just simple math. I have no problem with that, if anything they are still too disparate

Because this isn't an edition change, so there's no real force requiring you even use whatever nerfs they might come up with.
either you go with the 2024 books or you don’t, but better balance still means that not everything is simply buffed up, esp if it is meant to be compatible

The only one that is close is PAthfinder, which was designed with racial feats. So yeah, they could tell half elves that they could take elf, half-elf, or human feats.... oops, it seems you can only be a half-elf/half-human with that system though. Per the rules, there is no way to be a half-elf/Half-Shoony.
For what it's worth, as of the 2e remaster, "half-elves" (renamed Aiuvarin) have been turned into a Versatile Heritage akin to how Pathfinder handles planetouched, so they can now be applied to any base ancestry, not just human.

Likewise with "half-orcs", now called Dromaar.
