D&D (2024) Greatweapon fighting style? Is this another joke? Did everyone at WotC failed elementary school math classes?

Old school bias that fighters are for new or dumb players and wizards are for veteran and smart players.
Yes, indeed! Based on all the threads we've gotten about how the Wizard class is "overpowered" and can do everything all the other classes can do but "better"... I suspect a whole heap of people do in fact see this bias all the time, LOL!

These threads are always all about how the Wizard always has just the right spell cast at just the right time to effectively get past all challenges faster and easier than any of the other PCs at the table. Which means that apparently all of these tables must have their most intelligent and tactically-savvy player playing the Wizard character because they seem to know exactly what spells are needed and can cast them at the right times all the time.

But every time I've mentioned that once you just put a mediocre player behind the wheel of the Wizard that suddenly that class doesn't seem "overpowered" anymore... that's treated like an impossibility. The idea of mediocre Wizard play seems unfathomable to them. Which means those biases you mention are still a full-on reality for a lot of people.

I'm not arguing with the math, I'm arguing with the feeling. Never being able to roll less than a 6 on the die with a great sword is cool. Being able to roll a 15 damage with a single attack at 1st level is cool. The math isn't felt at the table. The floor increase is. I doubt any player who chooses this fighting style will feel bad about it. They'llurned remember all the times the turned a 2 into a 6.
This.

I’ve taken suboptimal choices in games before largely because I don’t look at the game as a min-maxer/power gamer. I’m looking at what looks cool for my character concept.

I remember another player at my table once telling me on and on about how much more damage I could do if i would just do a couple of level dips of fighter, and I finally told him, we’re playing this game up to Level 20. I’m going to have a powerful character regardless, and I want to have a 20th level in a single class because I want to try out ALL of those features including the capstone.

People approach the game and the choices in different ways.

It's forced

The fighter is forced on the new and dumb. Therefore designer design it for the new and dumb.

The wizard is only allowed to be played by the veterans and is design for it. So when given to newbs, they bog the game down.

If you roll 4d6 damage the current great weapon fighting style is +2.

Critting with a Maul + True Stike + Hunter's Mark = 12d6, and add 6 damage.

It is changes to allow all damage.

nothing specific in 2014 that it only refers to base damage die of weapon and not all dice rolled, yet it was clarified later.
who says it's not the same in 2024?

"Dumb" people won't notice the difference.

They will be too busy having fun to stop and do math.

And their maul is still doing more damage than the longsword.

The question is why there is no fighter for smart people or arcanist for dumb people?
Are you saying your not smart enough to combine push, slow, polearm master, crusher, and battlemaster maneuvers?

Too much weapon swapping to keep track of?

And you want to stick with an Evoker who can just toss damage anywhere?
