Nothing, that they are both reptilian, but one has no tropes associated with being as such, and instead is very 'human' is just one of the reasons I feel Lizardmen are the more distinct option, again with the limitations of the (2014 especially) Dragonborn option.

As noted, the solution I believe is to have a Wings and Tail.
I would lean toward the magical and elemental aspects of dragons before focusing on flight; after all dragons aren’t just flying lizards either. Fire breathing is probably their most iconic ability.

I just cannot get over the Lizardman thing. Its a personal interpretation problem I know, but for me Wings is the solution.

Last I checked, the dominant IPs for RPGs are still using them.

"You can just use Humans for that." applies to any and every trope imaginable and is a valid option until you say "I actually want to just be fully magical, and have wings."
yeah there is a reason most fantasy just has humans in it now in books

Especially when Lizardfolk such as the Argonians from the Elder Scrolls series sport nearly all of the same features as a Dragonborn? :)

Only if you are a Brass, Gold or Red Dragonborn. ;) I prefer the Bronze's Lightning breath.

i might try to lean lizardfolk more into the aquatic reptile iconography if trying to distinguish them, they already have hold breath, what about a swim speed too? or give them a camoflage ability like chameleons.

make dragonborn these big powerful 'brutes' with their flight and breathweapons who take things on headfirst, then lizardfolk are the skittery stealthy guys who hide in wait to bite you and drink your blood.

Obviously in DnD there are many breath weapons, but breath weapons are one of the key, signature, iconography features of dragons.

A dragon without a breath weapon is not a true dragon, according to the rules of DnD.

Because GGRM's success sucked all imagination out of the genre for over a decade?
Honestly outside of western gaming it’s been that way for a while. It’s just that a lot more people play Warcraft than read new fantasy fiction.

Although Japanese fantasy tends to either not use race or not use Tolkien races as such.
