Does any game deserve to succeed?

pretty sure they understand it, but why would they aim to be less successful....
If they wanted a better game, and they believed as I do that a game that has and follows a targeted philosophy is a better game, they would I think be ok with a slight smaller market share. A huge weakness in WotC D&D as a system is its owner's insistence on market dominance.

I'm drifting away from D&D due to a combination of my own changing tastes and changes to D&D. But despite my interests diverging, I think D&D is a good game. I think every edition of D&D has been a good game (not you, 4th edition). A somewhat common criticism I've heard over the years is that D&D is only popular because of name recognition, but I think if you made a bad game and slapped the D&D logo on it then it wouldn't sell very well. People would stop playing.

Yeah, I think the claims that name dropping D&D on tv shows rocketed 5E to success despite being a bad game is a bit farfetched.
