Ah. So it's really a zoomed-out discussion of pacing. I was thinking more like screenwriting advice on pacing. For a quicker pace jump cut to the action, don't linger on resolved scenes, skip scenes without dramatic tension, etc. For a slower pace let scenes breathe, linger after a scene resolves, focus on the details, etc.
Just found a section called “Encounter Pace and Tension” which I think is along the lines you were looking for.

So far I’ve spotted a Variant rule for advancement via training and an Optional rule for Renown.
What about alternative or better developed encumbrance and dark vision? I seem to recall at one of those just kinda saying that the GM would decide and the other being a mechanically precise set of handcuffs for players and GM's to buyt heads over

Rules for number of encounters per day.

Rule1: there is no fixed number of encounters per day.

Consequence: the players never know if they are on the last encounter, so it is foolish for them to use any more than the minimum resources required to will the battle.

If players try to abuse resting throw random encounters at them until they get the message. That’s what random encounter tables are for, and why they have been part of D&D since the beginning.

Also, the world reacts. Dungeons repopulate, guards reinforce defences etc.

Make boss fights have multiple phases, so the players don’t know if the boss is going to stay down or get back up stronger than before. I expect we will see a version of the mythic monster rules in the new MM.

Optional: Use milestone levelling, so the players don’t get their reward until their objective is complete.

Rule 2: there is no rule 2.

The resting variant rules from the 2014 DMG didn't go away. They are just not in the 2024 DMG. You can still use the variant rules from the 2014 DMG just fine. This is still 5e, those rules are not gone.
Well...I mean if you are a new DM the rules are gone, because they aren't being republished. And if you can't recreate the same experience without access to materials they refuse to make available to new customers...how much is it really the same game?

The rules that are gone are the rules that were not used by many players - that's why they are gone.

And as for new players, you can't miss what you never had.

I'm still not sure what you mean - they tell you to work with your players and show you how. What more COULD they do?
provide actual guidance, like

three abilities appropriate to the background
Pick an origin feat appropriate to the background
Pick two skills appropriate to the background
Pick a tool proficiency appropriate to the background
Make a pack of equipment using 50gp, don’t put weapons and armor in it since that’s in the class equipment.

Work with your players belongs in chapter 1 or 2, it should not be the only thing you mention for any given subject.

You clarified since that they have the HOW, it just wasn’t in your post. So at this point I do not think I am still missing anything.
