D&D Movie/TV Hasbro Getting Out Of The Movie Business

While Hasbro is forging ahead with its own Dungeons & Dragons video game, following the massive success of Baldur's Gate 3, the future of its film involvement is less rosy. In an article with Bloomberg featuring Hasbro CEO Chris Cocks, it was revealed that the company won't be co-financing future movies following the underperformance of Honor Among Thieves and Transformers One.

The focus is moving towards video games. Cocks said to Bloomberg, "We want to reach fans where they want to play, and increasingly that is through digital expressions of their favorite brands".

Sony and Lions Gate will continue to make movies based on Hasbro properties, but Hasbro won't be involved in the financing.

John Wick may have been a bit of a positive, DADHAT pretty much rode the wave in the wake of that movie's peak popularity. But Mario pretty much killed it, its viewing figures tanked at that point.

Its drop off wasn't bad. A lot of movies make around 2/3rds of its box office first 3 weeks.

HAT was in trouble opening weekend. Even with a typical drop off (which it more or less had) it was on track for $200 million all up.

$150 million plus marketing you really need a big opening weekend.

Not "getting it done" had nothing to do with the content of the movie. The content was well-received by critics and viewers alike.

With ratings like that, this was pretty obviously a marketing or market dynamics failure, not a failure to make an entertaining film.
Yeah, unfortunate reality that delivering a quality movie does not mean success at tge box office.

I find trouble with that thinking. Isn't that post hoc ergo propter hoc?

Never really thought of that, but it makes absolute sense. Being able to stream past movies or "buy" them from the service certain kills that market.

Animated series for Drizzt trilogy and Icewind Dale trilogy. Done.

If they can do it for Arcane, Vox Machina, and Twilight of the Gods, then can do a D&D story.
That could work. I was very entertained by Arcane, Twilight of the Gods, and Blue-Eyed Samurai. When / if second seasons come out I will likely watch the first season again simply due to my enjoyment the first time.

Had the stars aligned, it wouldn't have been the second.

Bring earplugs. I do. If movies were any less loud, you'd hear whining kids, cellphone conversations, chomping of dine-in meals, and probably flatulence (hopefully not too close).

I'm glad they're out of the movie game (no pun, I swear!). But since video games are the new movies, we're still not safe!
Oh, I've tried earplugs - but then the dialog is muffled. :(

Arcane season 2 is already out, final three episodes releasing tomorrow.
