D&D (2024) Help Me Hate Monks (Less Than I Currently Do)

No idea never been into American comic books.
Neither am I, but I know enough to be aware that the sorcerer class is pretty much inspired by X-Men. Magic acquired from studying books (wizard) and binding spirits (warlock) can be traced thematically to 17th century Europe, but "I haz innate powerz" (also includes psionics) is very 60s America.


And for those who might not know, the 1970s American TV show that the original D&D monk was based on was set in the Old West, with only flashbacks to China.

I really don't get what this obsession with "monastic orders" is. It's not part of the rules, it's not part of the fluff. It's not even part of history - itinerant friars and wandering mystics have always been a thing. Why can't the player decide for themselves how they acquired their abilities? why must it be tied to some organisation?

Monk...monastery. It's literally part of the name?
