Following the market isn't always the best decision - that's what they did with 4e, then found themselves in a marketplace where they couldn't compete with an established market leader. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. But being a secondary school teacher, one of the things you observe is just how difficult it is to keep up with popular culture. But I'm not so far behind that I can't see how totally out of touch people on these forums are. D&D started out reflecting the pop culture of the 1960s and 70s, and has continuously changed in order to stay relevant. But people cannot change in the same way a game can. They remain fixed in the culture of their formative years, because those are the years the human brain is completely focused on learning and acquiring culture.

WotC don't always make the right decisions, but they are better placed to know their market, and better motivated to want to make decisions that will be profitable.
Nah, I'm like the vampire Lestat.

"Interview with the Vampire" 's concept* aligns with what you said above. Immortal vampires get out of touch and bored, and sometimes so full of ennui that they go into the ground and some never wake back up.

Its an ongoing theme, and Lestat somehow always manages to connect with culture and developed excitement. Notably via Louis.

All that being said (/end tangent) your thoughts on formative years and culture are spot on.

* don't ask me to discuss any books other than the 1st trilogy.

@I’m
Younger players will use the digital version, so cross-referencing is a non-issue. “What is this pa-per you talk about grandad?”

Do you not think WotC’s market research means they understand their market better than you do?
I actually really enjoyed your follow up comment about your experiences teaching and our formative cultures… However the unfriendly tone of this message leaves me feeling you’re more interested in scoring points than having a polite conversation trusting in the other person to present their ideas/self in good faith, so forgive me for not following up on what would might otherwise be an enriching conversation. I do hope others will feel safe engaging with you on that topic because the topic is worthwhile.

WOTC released a adventure called Dragon Heist without any actual heist yet marketed it to all of us like we were getting the Oceans 11 campaign.

Stop putting any stock in there marketing department.

Nope...forces of nature and fey are not synonomous. (IMO)
