For those who haven't seen it, could you summarize? The Doctor Who 2023 Christmas Special is a good example of how goblins are now seen in our post-Tolkien world.

Nah, I'm like the vampire Lestat.Following the market isn't always the best decision - that's what they did with 4e, then found themselves in a marketplace where they couldn't compete with an established market leader. But that doesn't seem to be the case here. But being a secondary school teacher, one of the things you observe is just how difficult it is to keep up with popular culture. But I'm not so far behind that I can't see how totally out of touch people on these forums are. D&D started out reflecting the pop culture of the 1960s and 70s, and has continuously changed in order to stay relevant. But people cannot change in the same way a game can. They remain fixed in the culture of their formative years, because those are the years the human brain is completely focused on learning and acquiring culture.
WotC don't always make the right decisions, but they are better placed to know their market, and better motivated to want to make decisions that will be profitable.
I actually really enjoyed your follow up comment about your experiences teaching and our formative cultures… However the unfriendly tone of this message leaves me feeling you’re more interested in scoring points than having a polite conversation trusting in the other person to present their ideas/self in good faith, so forgive me for not following up on what would might otherwise be an enriching conversation. I do hope others will feel safe engaging with you on that topic because the topic is worthwhile.Younger players will use the digital version, so cross-referencing is a non-issue. “What is this pa-per you talk about grandad?”
Do you not think WotC’s market research means they understand their market better than you do?
The thing that's irritating me about the more extreme version of the change is that I consider both prime material and fey (and to a lesser extent Shadowfell) goblins to be legit for different types of story.
Nope...forces of nature and fey are not synonomous. (IMO)we got some details here on the fey goblins

Fey in Monster Manual 2024 are defined not only as creatures of the feywild but also as those who embody forces of nature. Goblinoids have been recast to fey Goblins represent embodiments of recklessness and ruin. They are often used by more powerful creatures to cause evil.bsky.app
