Well, hypothetical or not, again I point out that it’s a three year old decision not to use that word.

Not so hypothetical - this has never come up in conversation before, but I went over and asked my wife, who is Jewish.

That’s my take. I’m not Jewish, it didn’t occur to me that this term had those origins but I have a hard time believing that objections to this rose from a non-Jewish group of fans.

The major point is as much the Blood Libel adjacent nature of the Lich, that compounds the base of "Phylactery." The Lich is literally doing what too many Jews throughout history down to today have been accused of doing: kidnapping innocents to ritually murder them to extend their lives.

She and I both understand that, though that wasn't necessary for my wife's assessment. The more basic point of liches being evil undead and referencing Judaica for their color (even with a non-Hebrew word) was sufficient.

I mean, "don't make it personal" is one of the basic rules of conduct on this forum. I'm not sure why you'd even make a statement like this, short of a veiled reference to things you know you're not supposed to say on here. Maybe don't do that from now on?

It will always be certain that there's those that it bothers and those that it doesn't—people are funny that way. Both are valid. Is WotC over-correcting? Maybe? But I'm sure that they just want to avoid any more landmines like they had with Spelljammer. And, of course, they are late to the party (again)
