They took nothing away from the game. The concept still exists. They renamed it, that's all they did. You are not entitled to the name you prefer, you have no ownership of it.

Honestly,, this reminds me of how a certain online person whom I will not name posted a picture of Elliot Paige Pre-transition with the phrase "remember what they took from you." As if anyone had the right to dictate what name or gender he chose for himself. The person still exists. What you prefer their name be is irrelevant. The concept of a lich soul vessel exists, what you prefer it be called is irrelevant. You are no poorer for any RPG company changing that than you are them changing magic-user to wizard.

A similar, but not the same concept is there. A soul jar isn't a phylactery. It's a soul jar. Phylactery is gone. It has been taken away.

And no, it's nothing even remotely close to that example up there. Phylactery as an amulet, which exists across multiple cultures, is not tied to the Tefillin.

Can't we decide for ourselfs whether something has been taken away from the game and whether we are poorer for it or not. I don't care about magic-user and wizard but some people do. There is nothing wrong with them feeling like the game lost something in that change. People keep saying we aren't missing anything, it isn't changing the experience for us, but I think we know our own feelings on this better than others

I'm assuming you're referring to Alien. It's unfortunate that that scene was eroticized; it's really supposed to be about the utter vulnerability of Ripley when all of the tech and gadgetry is removed. She only has her wits; both she and the xenomorph are naked - Sigourney Weaver actually suggested she do the scene nude, but it was rejected by Scott.

But I agree with the general thrust of your post.

I agree with this take. That has always been my reading as well. Also I don't think 70s audiences were especially titivated by panties by the end of that decade. It isn't even filmed in an erotic way. Even when I first saw it, it didn't strike me as a scene meant to seen as sexy in any way

It seems like the cultural needle is moving the other way. The current powers that be have threatened convinced some big corporations (eg Google, Apple, Amazon, Disney) to ease off of DEI initiatives. A certain billionaire (trillionaire?) has already made his stance clear to Hasbro, thus WotC may be next to follow suit. So... terms like "Phylactery" and "Oriental" may return to the printed page for those who lamented their absence from the world's most popular RPG.

Oh well. Back to tradition, right?

I never said I was owed anything or that my opinion had more weight. I am just forgiving my opinion on the topic (just as I haven't told you your opinion has less weight than mine or doesn't matter, even though clearly disagree with much of it).

This has nothing to do with what we are talking about. I don't care what Elliot Page does. That is their life and they should do what they want. Doesn't impact me. But changing phylactery does, so I care about it

I actually don't think we'll see a return to terms that have already been deemed offensive. More likely, we'll see that concept just ignored. The next Ravenloft book won't mention the Vistani. The next lich won't mention a soul item (like OD&D, how's that for a return to tradition) etc. if it can't be avoided, you may see some surrender, but I don't think they are going to see 2026 as a safe place to publish Oriental Adventures 5e, they will just quietly continue to ignore Kara Tur exists.
