I dunno, if it hadn't been used in a while and then was suddenly brought back in a book featuring an ethnic group white guys like to fetishize, then it probably doesn't matter if it was handled differently or not.
To correct the issue, Comeliness originally appeared in Dragon magazine during 1e, was reprinted in 1983 in the World of Greyhawk boxed set, then in 1985 in the 1e Unearthed Arcana, and then later in 1985 in the 1e Oriental Adventures. It never appeared again to my knowledge (it wasn't in the 3e OA).

Comeliness was one of those things groups often used, even when they weren't in books. I never used it. But I remember meeting lots of people who did, usually because they didn't like that much being folded into CHR alone. You almost got a sense of the groups style from the fact that they used Comeliness (it wasn't a bad sign so much as an indication the sorts of things the group was inclined to be nerdy about)

The only reason we used it back in the 80's was it was another 4d6 drop lowest that you could dump stat into.

Actually, it would be perfect, but there are too many who wouldn't stand for even this sort of compromise. They insist their way is the one true way. 🤷‍♂️
Lol. Literally every time a new 5e book comes out or is announced, a certain group of people rush to discussions about it to trash them over not following the “one true way” they felt was abandoned when WotC announced they were going to get rid of the racism in the game.

We used it for a while back in the 80's. When the DM realized that we were dumping our lowest stat into comeliness which really didn't mean much, he made it a separate roll. Eventually, because it didn't mean much, we just stopped using it. It probably lasted 6 months, if that.

As I said...
They insist their way is the one true way.

It goes both ways.

Which is why I felt this:
My idea is that addition rather than subtraction is the better path.
is the best way.

As Opposed to the more usual one true way that any and all change is bad and must be opposed no matter what?

Never minding that normalizing bigotry in the books through the use of dog whistle sidebars isn’t blatantly obvious. But hey, sure, it’s always the other side that’s totally unreasonable right?

Several of us rolled characters with COM when we first got UA, but it never came up in game and we just kinda just dropped it entirely. It didn't hurt that 2e came out not long after, and it had abandoned COM.
