D&D General Do You Use "D&D" As Code For "RPGs"?

I hate the term FLGS.
There...i said it.
Everyone throws that term around here and I have no idea what it means. I assume the last two letters are ‘gaming store’
It’s Friendly Local Game Store. I generally just say LGS because I find the “friendly” part... I guess kind of patronizing? Like, let me be the judge of how friendly the store is. I’m luckily enough to have several game stores in my area, most of which do have very friendly staff and regulars. The one that I’ve found to be unfriendly I no longer frequent. But, yeah, while most LGSes are pretty friendly in my experience, not all are, so it doesn’t make sense to me to make friendliness a part of the acronym by default.

If it even comes to stating that I'm playing an RPG and I'm talking about my RPG habit with someone outside the hobby, I just say that "D&D." Otherwise, it usually goes like this:

Me "I'm playing [insert rpg]."
Them "What's that?"
Me "It's a game like D&D."
Them "Oh. Ok. Cool."

What I really think is that if I say something like "Worlds Without Number," they just assume it's some sort of board game or computer game and don't even swerve to find out more.
Some might also mistake it for the podcast Worlds Beyond Number.

There’s something clever here about not giving an “F” to/about the unfriendly ones… but it is escaping me!

For me, any game store that has weird, unfriendly vibes just isn’t worthy of the acronym or my business. The FLGS isn’t a blanket term, it only covers those that are cool and friendly to everyone. But, I think I get your point… while you and I might agree on which ones are Friendly, there are others in the hobby who have… different… criteria.

I’ve never been to an LGS that wasn’t LGBTQ friendly. Probably helps that I live in one of the more pro-LGBTQ parts of the country. The one LGS I found unfriendly was just… weirdly MTG elitist. I think they were started by Magic players, primarily to be a Magic store, and kind of begrudgingly stocked other game stuff as a necessary part of doing business.

Also they don’t keep their bathrooms clean.

Yes, I will say I’m doing D&D this weekend to my non-gaming partner even if one of the sessions is WFRP.

I also know at least two of my players in our newer group (only playing together 3 years) call our game night D&D even though it’s WFRP.

I think it is synonymous for a lot of people.

In 99.99% of cases, it's just D&D regardless of what I'm actually playing. If someone asks what's that? I generally don't take the time to explain it unless they brought up the topic and shows some interest in playing.
