Sigil, Wizards of the Coast's VTT, Officially Launches

Sigil, the 3D VTT developed by Wizards of the Coast and formerly known as Project Sigil, has officially launched on Window devices. Today, Wizards of the Coast announced that anyone with a D&D Beyond account (free or paid) can now access Sigil, provided they have a computer with Windows OS. Interestingly, the system's full functionality is based off of D&D Beyond's subscription tiers, with access to create multiplayer rooms and the ability to share and load maps tied to the Master Tier account. Master Tier subscribers also have access to builder kits, custom mini outfits, and unpainted minis. The Sigil client can be downloaded from D&D Beyond.

Sigil has been in development since at least 2023 alongside the launch of the One D&D initiative. One major concern about the new system, which uses Unreal Engine 5 to create 3D battle maps for D&D, was its pricing. At least for now, pricing seems to be tied directly to D&D Beyond subscriptions instead of pushing an additional monetization scheme onto players.

EN World saw a preview build of Sigil earlier this year, with a robust and relatively quick-to-implement map building system. One question that I kept asking while previewing Sigil involved exactly what Wizards wanted Sigil to be, as it functionally appeared to be a level or map builder with some basic D&D automation built into the game. The system doesn't include a full D&D revised 5E engine, but it does contain a significant amount of integration for the app to mimic some of D&D Beyond's dice rolling and resource management system has. It doesn't look like a bad VTT, although it's more appropriate for big set piece battles rather than standard "goblins attack the caravan" type encounters.

While not as pretty, so far the MAPS VTT on DDbeyond is orders of magnitude more useful that SIGIL.

I use Maps for my online group and it's great. I've tried SIGIL a few times in the last month or so, can't even imagine running a test encounter with it, much less a session - just found it clunky and difficult. Hope it gets much easier!

MAPS is what they should have thrown all this effort behind.

More and more SIGIL just looks like a video game with extra steps...

I got the email for the gold dragon since I got the book/digital bundle for 2024 books….ill have to try it out tomorrow. On a related note, I was building a dungeon for my table top players to explore on both old tabletop connect but more recently the dm mode for Solasta…the only drawback is how quickly they could go through say a 10 room dungeon compared to the same 10 rooms at the table but I do enjoy giving them different play experiences to keep it fresh and mingle in new things. If this can be used in anyway like that, I’m game for giving it a try.

I’m going to try to download it tomorrow and see how it works and looks. I have 1 laptop for bg3 cause the screen doesn’t work and hooked to my try but my tabletop laptop is slightly newer and should handle it…if it loads as Dire Bear is having issue tonight :)

It looks pretty, and I may give it a try, but for me Sigil would need to at least get close to the functionality of the current available VTTs (I use Fantasy Grounds) in order for me to consider it as a possible replacement. I do like the idea of having spell effects and other visual animations, but as someone who runs mostly homebrew campaigns, the idea of building maps in 3D sounds like a lot of work. Plus I already have purchased the products I need in Fantasy Grounds and don't like the idea of having to buy yet another copy of the rulebooks, plus $55/year to use this software, since you have to have the Master Tier subscription both to host games and to access most of the builders' tools. And I agree that if this takes off, that $55 will almost certainly go up.

I can't get the installer to complete the installation . . . it gets stuck on "Update" and I can't launch the app. :(
Well, nevermind . . . as soon as I posted, the update finally went through and the installer completed!

Just poked around a bit tonight . . . building maps was fun, but that's not really what I want. I want a complete set of maps for all Curse of Strahd encounters (for example) so that I can run that adventure online easily with little prep. It doesn't have to be free.

Exploring the 3D environments already created in the sample adventure was fun . . . but a little weird, since they look straight out of an isometric CRPG, but are not interactive and of course the controls are very different. That's not really bad, but my brain was confused.

Probably dont have enough RAM, HD Space, etc, I had the same problem. I had to use another laptop to get it to install. Honestly, don't waste your time
