D&D (2024) What's In D&D's New Starter Set?

There's a new Dungeons & Dragons Starter Set, titled Heroes of the Borderlands, coming in September. WotC has given us a quick peek at what's inside! The set is designed to be replayable, and comes with maps and cards, which are presumably part of the tile-based character creation system WotC has hinted at recently. The video doesn't reveal much else, but we should have more information over the coming months.

I'm sure it's a remix more along the lines of Tomb of Annihilation being a remix of Isle of Dread/Tomb of Horrors/Dwellers in the Forbidden City and less along the lines of the "reprints" in Tales from Yawning Portal or Quests from the Infinite Staircase.

Still, I'd like to see more. If nothing else, I'm a sucker for collecting Starter sets and seeing what designers are trying to do to teach the game to new players and where their head is with how they expect the game to sort of run.
Quests from the Infiite actually were pretty muchproduct (Expeditions to the Barrier Peaks is rrslly an entirely new modile)...and notably has the same lead designer as this product.

Generally speaking, I am pro starter sets. I think D&D has always benefited from cool, clear examples of play.

There's a bit in this video that feels locked in, but whatcha gonna do with 3 minutes? Hopefully, the end result I'd a cool product that emphasizes the broad, untethered possibilities that is D&D.

The last thing D&D needs is a starter product that limits possibilities.

It literally says it's great for replayability? How is that limiting?

I am curious about the replayability they mentioned. Sounds like it will have some sandbox elements instead a straight-shot A-B-C adventure.

Not as much as it appears at first glance. It retains a lot of “this is a room, full of a lot of X monsters, who try and kill you” from the original, along with “empty room”. I’ve felt I needed to update content further as I’ve prepared to run it.

I mean these are not necessarily mutually exclusive. Goldeneye was not a Sandbox and I still played the Dam level every once in a while to replay it. I can see players replaying the same adventure and scenarios using different classes in this boardgame-like arrangement.
