Wheel of Time S3

Understand the limitations of the TV budget (which is comparatively big) it just irks me when TV directors think they have a bigger budget than they do. Like, so much is good in WoT from the landscapes to the cities to the weave, and then a scene of a road being torn up by magic is so bad it takes me right out of the scene.
That was actually a practical effect, not SFX. They talk about in one of the behind the scene videos.

A huge adaptation like that would be amazing. Kind of like the drawling, long Chinese version of 9 body problem compared to the more compact Netflix version. I really like both and both do different things very well and are worth watching.
Yup, definitely different styles thst can work.

Personally, I miss the days when effects were bad, and the audience accepted it. Old Doctor Who could be far more ambitious on a tiny budget because it didn't have the constraint of making it look real.

But I haven't been able to work up any enthusiasm to start season 3. The world and characters are uninteresting, I just don't care what happens next.

Well, staying up late to watch Episode 4 was worth it. The Rhiudean sequence was pretty much straight from the book and visually stunning, especially the Age of Legends parts. It was a joy to see it visualized onscreen so very well.
Nice, thst is impressive that they could pull that off.

I think of WoT improves by accretion. Growing more a more impressive as the characters grow and develop. The World Building happens the same way. As the characters experiences reveal more about it. I struggle to see how the characters can be called uninteresting. You have…
  • Rand needs to unite the world that fears/hates him under his banner, while trying to master his powers and avoiding going mad.
  • Perrin can communicate with Wolves that treat him like a brother though he is hunted by the whitecloaks for it.
  • Matt can remember his past lives and the skills that brings him while being bound to a legendary magical artifact.
  • Egwene has been enslaved and forced to use the power much more strongly than is safe but escaped and is now left training with people much less powerful than she is. Leaving a burning hatred of the Seanchan.
  • Siuan Sanche is proud and steely, but left weakened by the argument by Moiraine and Rands Escape.
  • Three really strong 3D villains in Ishmael, Lanfear and Liandrin.
  • There are a host of other characters like Thom, Elaine, Nyneave etc that will get more screen time but they are all interesting.
Like I said in a previous thread, Magic in WoT has rules and the foundations have been laid that the high magic elements of the world can build apon. I think the series needs a map in it somehow. GoT has cornered the idea of opening credits but they need to see the world laid out I think so you can see how it fits together.

S3E4 is an absolute masterpiece of storytelling and perhaps the best hour of filmed fantasy I've ever seen.
It is an adaptation of one of the best sequences in fantasy literature...hearing they stuck thst landing might be enough to reel me back in.
