Spoilers Daredevil: Born Again (Spoilers)

There is a separate City of London, which is a neighbourhood.

Salford is a city in it's own right, despite being attached to Manchester.

Even when not separate cities per se, often larger urban areas have distinct neighborhoods that have their own identities and are referred to as such. When talking New York, SoHo comes to mind.

But would you refer to your neighborhood as “the city”, or would you reserve that term for the whole of London?

What I mean is, they talk about “the city”, and to me that means all of NYC, but in the next breath, they make it clear they’re just referring to the neighborhood of Hell’s Kitchen – as if it wasn’t part of a much larger city.

Obviously in this new show we’ve expanded to “the city” being all of NYC now that Fisk is the mayor. This is more a question as I watch the OG show.
Hells Kitchen was originally the area tucked in between the Hudson River docks and the Rail Yards and thus kinda cut off from the rest of the city ( it also has Central Park on another border). It was an industrial area and slum tenements for the immigrant dock workers (mainly Irish refugees) and thus got its reputation for crime and gangs that earned it the Hells Kitchen moniker - and Hells Kitchen is a cool name, so people are prone to keep it rather than something boring like Midwest Manhattan

Interesting theory.

Random question: why do people in Daredevil always refer to Hell’s Kitchen as if it was its own city rather than a small part of NYC?
Different areas of NYC have their own divergent cultures. Areas tended to be settled by different racial and cultural groups, making them quite recognizable. As time goes on the dominant groups in an area change, but the dividing lines tend to remain the same.

So, to be clear, indirectly Matt is the reason Luca is dead, right? If Luca gets the diamond he pays off his 1.8 million bill instead of mouthing off to Fisk?
Maybe. It makes sense but that assumes Luca has cash-flow issues if he needs to risk a big $1.8 million score to pay that bill. Or, this is a way for Luca to push the $1.8 million payout onto some other sucker. Given Luca's bravado, it may have even be a way to gain a piece of leverage/insurance over Kingpin, depending on whose diamond it is, to get the fine dropped.

I have this strange feeling that the diamond belongs to the guy Luca owed the debt to.

My entire life this is how I've heard New Yorkers refer to the various burrows and sometimes even neighborhoods. Manhattan, Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, and Staten Island all have their own distinct identities and sometimes you can refine that even further by neighborhood. Harlem and Hell's Kitchen both are located in Manhattan. Each burrow and neighborhood is its own little microcosm.

And just getting home can be tough.
