Pineapple Express: Someone Is Wrong on the Internet?

Fair enough but someone asked me for data.
This isn't a ding against you; I don't think most people know how bad FBI data is, or why. It's pretty shady of Congress, frankly, since it's their fault for breaking the data the way they have, because it means that Americans don't have access to government data that they deserve to have when making big life and economic decisions.

The main data I was able to find was FBI data, Mass.gov data (which I am sure is probably similar but you have to log in for that) and data by city that looked like it might be related to companies selling real estate. So I was taking it all with a grain of salt.

The issue is there are places where violence is a problem, especially for young people. Again, where I lived, there was a school around the corner and the kids had to walk past drug dealers and prostitutes on their way home. And I used to go to a local boxing gym, and lots of parents sent their kids there as a kind of 'guns down, gloves up' approach to keeping them out of trouble. So I think minimizing it where it is actually occurring also does a disservice to people

FBI data is unfortunately pretty terrible, because it's voluntary for police departments to report the crimes (thanks, gun industry lobbyists!) and there's no standard for what the entries mean (so different departments will fill in their forms differently, even with identical conditions on the crime).

So take FBI stats on crime across the US with an enormous grain of salt.

I would advise the one on the left, where FBI crime data is involved, though there are similar uses for the other two.

Canadians, despite being metric, weigh things in pounds and measure height in feet and inches (longer distances are in kilometres though). Even if that weren't the case... I'm pretty sure we don't need math Duck-splained to us! :)

Yes, we all know how hard it is to move heavy things. Wasn't really the point I was trying to get across though...
The point was that, in fairness to Payn, his comment was not utter US cluelessness, cultural chauvinism, or assuming that everyone knew how things work in Eagle-land. They had every reason to believe their comment was close to universal in broad strokes, that people would catch the relevant universal theme (large metal box=hard to move) and had even included a helpful reference point.

I have no idea how you decided this was x-splaining to you. I would think the inclusion of the metric conversion* would be an indicator that it was never about you**, but about their post, which was literally the only thing I covered in my response.
*clearly not for Canadians, which I assure you I did not know about you, as this was never about you.
**'for anyone,' as I included in my post.

Edit: big long rest of post cross-posted with mod-text.

I'm on 'your side' of the discussion I guess... but can people cite their sources when they make these kind of statements?
Just saw the mod warning re: gun discussions.

Wow. Come on...

Something about my pretty innocuous post has created an itch in your drawers. I'm not sure what that itch is... don't really want to get to the bottom of it, based on the point-by-point nature of your response (which never ends well).

Look, you make good posts. Don't take what I said personally. Move on.
