The price of streaming vs out right owning

I recently compiled a list of all my subs. I was paying close to $800/month that was around $9500/year.
Which subs and which plans?

For myself, all of my current subs come into about the same as a satellite bill. But that's just me and doing the basic plans. And since I live in an apartment, I've cut down either accidently or on purpose on owning physical media. I'm currently subbed to Prime, walmart+,Disney+ with hulu bundle but I also get both Prime and Walmart+ at a discount due to disability.

You're wrong. At least for budget, it's not remotely close. I have saved thousands of dollars. And that's without putting a price on storage, environmental costs, etc.

My subs are Prime, Disney+, Paramount+, AppleTV+, Netflix. Amazon Music and Apple Music I have both as both are included in bundles, so some redundancy (and no need for Spotify also). I think that's about it. About £60ish per month?

Plus SkyTV which is a mix of terrestrial TV, cable/satellite channels, streamer, and broadband provider and comes to about £40 I think. I'm not entirely sure on that one, as it's all packaged into stuff.

$800 is an impressive total. I'd be fascinated to hear that what included!

Amazon Prime, Walmart+, M365, Adobe, Quickbooks Self-employed, Netflix, YouTube, Disney/Hulu, Paramount, Peacock, Crunchyroll, BBC, NYT, NPR, Hasbro Pulse, Discord, SWTOR, EA Play, Xbox game pass, PS+, Nintendo, UPlay, Starlink, Amazon Music, Incogni, Credit Monitoring/Identity protection, LinkedIn, Kindle, PBS kids….

I am missing some but these are just off top of head.

When I bought my laptop a couple years ago I bought the Windows last edition (maybe 2020/2021) instead of joining Microsoft360 for a monthly rate. I do not need all the bloat and mostly just Word and Excel.

Now I just need to figure out why Apple charges the PayPal account $1 each month.

There’s at least a dozen of those that I don’t even know what they are! :D

Some are business related. I switched from Adobe to NitroPDF since I could purchase the software.

I had a few more beyond it such as Namecheap and a monthly web license and my wife had several.

Subs are pervasive. Many do not send a monthly bill. They just hit your credit card so you only see them on your statement.

This is the new world of subs versus ownership.

so yeah all that, no wondering when Clint said it's cheaper you said it wasn't...

It’s not cheaper. People think buying a game for 70 is expensive versus a sub that lets you play multiple games but in the long term, it is not. I was spending 70/ month and maybe the family played 2 games. Are the subs worth $840/ year? I was not spending that buying games.

I found that most of the content I had access too went unused even in a family of 4.

If you’re not using the service you subscribe to, then it’s just basically a waste of money. It’s very possible to get more value than what you pay if you’re using a service frequently. I’ve started getting strategic about the subscription services, cancelling several and starting to round robin a couple of others. Do I really need Netflix all year long? Probably not.
